batapata: "to touch energy"- work, activity, action.

batapata international artists workshop is part of a network of workshops facilitated by the triangle trust, a non profitable organisation based in the united kingdom. batapata was initiated in 1998 as a rejuvination of the pachipamwe workshops of the late 80s.

the new generation of artists held its first workshop in the city of mutare in 99 under the co-ordination of gemma rodrigues who subsequently handed over its organisation to the current co-ordinators, odiola vurinosara, chiko chazunguza and stephen garan'anga.

batapata aims to create an enviroment conducive to artistsic exploration and experimentation by nurturing and promoting local talent and encouraging intercultural understanding between local and international artists.

the workshop is a cooperative venture organised by artists for artists, which brings together local and international artists for two intensive weeks in an enviroment, away from all types of usual disturbances. this biannual workshop is alternated by a residency programme, that allows a selected foreign artist to interact with the zimbabwean arts community.
