batapata international artists workshop 1999, initiated by triangle trust took place from 27 september to 9 october 1999 at the Mutare Diocesan Training centre in Chikanga, Zimbabwe. 22 artists for different parts of the world took part at this workshop. the workshop was organised by a group of artists with Gemma Rodrigues as the co-ordinator.while batapata drew much expertise from pachipamwe, it was a new workshop for a new generation of artists.
prior to this workshop in the city of mutare, one member from the organising crew went there from harare, to run an outreach programme, which was later complimented by other out reach programmes by visiting artists. a public open day on the first of october at the venue was followed by the international artists forum at the National Art Gallery in harare . selected works from the workshop were shown in the three major cities of zimbabwe- mutare, bulawayo, harare
