FRIDAY TEMBO

'Talk to your ancestors, and they will respond ...through wood. Put beads on the pieces to make them alive... you will never go wrong'.

Born in 1962 in Lusaka. As a Miner, he changed to full time sculpturing in 1987. He has no formal art training but has benefited from workshops and by visiting fellow artists' studios. He has taken part in group shows and has had three solo shows in Zambia, plus exhibition in Zimbabwe, Namibia and Germany. He has vast experience of international workshops in Zambia's Mbile 94 - 97- 98 and 99, Zimbabwe, Namibia, United Kingdom and United States. Friday is a prolific sculptor who has produced several pieces scattered around the world in various collections. As master artist himself , he has set an apprenticeship studio facility within his estate, where he is grooming young artists like Mazu Kunene and others. His art is going through a dramatic transition, yet it has the artistic prowess that characterise Friday s' art.
He has won Ngoma Award, the Martin Phiri -Best Three - dimension category a record of four times than any artist, this simply shows the hard working spirit that drives Friday to be there when time needs him to deliver. He delivers them like sand upon the sea shore. He is a superstar in the gallery where he is known.
