Wasanii ( Swahili for 'artists') is an initiative which seeks to introduce artists to each other and to different means of production and practice.

It is our intention that by allowing people an intensive spell of working without the usual constraints and distractions of everyday living, in a place removed geographically from the familiar, the workshop can generate invention and offer a challenge to the habitual studio practice of the participants as well as opening an avenue of mutual cultural exchange and dialogue between individuals from diverse backgrounds who otherwise might never have met.

The provision of uninterrupted time, the enablement of cultural exchange and open dialogue produces experimental work capable of speaking to a world to which we return with new ideas.

We hope to engender new freedoms out of the constraints of a new environment, strangeness and difference effecting a communication between ourselves and our work and ourselves with others.

In that way, artists are able to learn through a free exchange of ideas. Freed from outside pressures, they are able to break out of the isolation artists often find themselves in. These was the driving principle that drove the first Triangle artists workshop organised in 1982 in New York after which wasanii is patterned.
