INTRODUCTION

 The East African Residency Programme was established in 2003. The programme objective is mainly to enhance sharing and cultural exchange among artists from the East African region and provide a forum for exchange.

The residency provides artists from the region with the opportunity to work in Kenya for a period of four to six weeks being dedicated time for the artists to make their private art Through the private art making it is hoped that the visiting artists will work alongside and interact with Kenyan artists.  

Kuona Trust Art studio is located in the Nairobi museum. In addition, the Trusts residency studio facilities are located at the Godown Art Centre which is a converted warehouse at the city’s industrial area which houses 10 art studios. The Art center also houses other performing and visual arts organizations. 

 The artist-in-residence programs allow artists to undertake their creative activities within the context of a different country and culture and allows those artists to come into contact with local arts. 

The residency also aims to nurture growth and positive change among East African artists through the sharing of skills in an environment conducive to art making.

 The Residency Programme provides visiting artists with the opportunity to work within a group of Nairobi-based artists whose practice varies mainly from painting, print-making and sculpture. Such a creative environment is extremely inspirational, encouraging exchange of ideas between practitioners. The process-base nature of the residencies allows visiting artists to develop projects in response to their new environment, while engaging with local practitioners.

FACILITIES

 A Studios are available for artists involved in the residency programme. studio costs, are covered by Kuona Trust, but no studio equipment is provided. Kuona will assist in making contacts with organizations and institutions for facilities required that can provide the use of equipment for visiting artists. Studios include basic furnishings (desk and chair). Access to office equipment e.g. photocopiers, fax, computers for email and Internet are available upon request.
