International Workshop - 1998

The First Ngoma International Artists’ Workshop took place between 16th August and 30th August 1998 at the Buluba Leprosy Centre near Lake Victoria about 150 km from Kampala. 23 artists took part, half of whom came from Uganda. six artists came from other parts of Africa and the remainder from as far afield as Trinidad, India and Scotland. George Kyeyune and Rose Kirumira were the co-ordinators.

The Leprosy Centre, which is an active institution looking after a decreasing number of lepers in their care, provided a challenging environment for the workshop.

The Prince Claus Fund was the main sponsor. The Commonwealth Foundation and The British Council supported the event together with local companies and institutions in Uganda.
