Basic Info

Since the opening of the center in 2000 the main thrust has been education. Teachers, students and other interested institutions in the surrounding area have been invited to visit.Talks and slide shows have been given both at the center and at local venues such as the Gweru Training College, Shurugwi Primary School and Shurugwi Secondary School.

In December 2001 a Workshop for schoolchildren was held by student teachers from Mkoba Teacher's Training College, Gweru in conjunction with local resident artists John Michael (printmaking) and Clarence Albert (painting & sculpture). The aim was to intoduce the children to new techniques, including stone sculpture and the use of a printing press. Spending time with practicing artists was a new experience for everybody involved, including the parents.

In September 2002 students from Shurugwi Secondary School were attached to the Art Centre for three weeks, which they spent creating sculpture for their end of year Cambridge Exams.
