Pottery is a new venture for us and we had our first Pottery
workshop in 2002.
The aim of the workshop: Participants should leave the workshop
knowing how to source clay, especially how to recognise good caly
in the rural areas, how to test it and modify it; how to build a
kiln and fire it; how to source local oxides to glaze it.
The Instructor was Dias Mahlate (Mozambican) from the University
of Namibia. Dias is a sculptor who attended the Thapong International
Artists' Workshop in the past and is well-known in the Region. One
of his areas of interest is the portable, home-made kiln, the skills
of which he shared with the participants.
