Virus protection programs
We cannot stress enough the importance of installing a virus protection
on your machine, there are plenty of free programs that you can download
from the Internet and the time you spend downloading and installing them
is nothing compared to the time you could loose if someone accidentally
sends you an infected file.
The virus protection we are recommending is a free program called AVG
Anti Virus, available to download from their website.
1. Click on this
link and follow the link on the page to the Free Download page
2. Click Download AVG Free Edition
3. Click the grey button that says Download AVG Free Edition
4. You will be asked to read and accept the License Agreement
5. Fill in the form and make sure you have ticked the box that
says 'Subscribe AVG Virus Alerts'
6. Click 'Please click here to start the download process.... '
7. A box will open and ask you to save the program to disk, press
Save
8. Double click on 'My Computer' and Go to C Drive
9. Double click on 'Program Files' and make a new folder called
'Virus Protection'
10. Open this new folder and click save
11. Close your browser
12. Open up 'My Computer' by double clicking on the icon
13. Double click on C Drive, click 'Program Files', then 'Virus
Protection' and finally double click on the file in the folder that ends
with the extension .exe
14. This should automatically start the process of installing the
program. If it asks you to save anything try and do so in the same 'Virus
Protection' folder so that you keep all the information together
15. Follow the on screen instructions and restart your computer
when necessary
Every email that you send and receive will be checked for virus' and the
program will run regular checks on your machine. Additionally, you will
be prompted to update the program from time to time and it is important
that you do this, as new virus' are invented all the time.
To run a complete test on your machine
16. Go to Start > Programs - it will either be in this list
or go to > Accessories > System Tools > AVG Anti-Virus for Windows
17. Click the button that says 'Run a Complete Test' and your whole
computer will be scanned for virus'
If a Virus is detected on your machine
AVG virus scanner should be able to detect and fix a virus and if this
happens, follow the on screen instructions. If you do encounter a virus
and your virus scanner does not pick it up, you can look it up on the
Internet in Google
or through one of the above links, there will be online instructions of
how to fix the problem.
