Virus protection programs

We cannot stress enough the importance of installing a virus protection on your machine, there are plenty of free programs that you can download from the Internet and the time you spend downloading and installing them is nothing compared to the time you could loose if someone accidentally sends you an infected file.

The virus protection we are recommending is a free program called AVG Anti Virus, available to download from their website.

1. Click on this link and follow the link on the page to the Free Download page
2. Click Download AVG Free Edition
3. Click the grey button that says Download AVG Free Edition
4. You will be asked to read and accept the License Agreement
5. Fill in the form and make sure you have ticked the box that says 'Subscribe AVG Virus Alerts'
6. Click 'Please click here to start the download process.... '
7. A box will open and ask you to save the program to disk, press Save
8. Double click on 'My Computer' and Go to C Drive
9. Double click on 'Program Files' and make a new folder called 'Virus Protection'
10. Open this new folder and click save
11. Close your browser
12. Open up 'My Computer' by double clicking on the icon
13. Double click on C Drive, click 'Program Files', then 'Virus Protection' and finally double click on the file in the folder that ends with the extension .exe
14. This should automatically start the process of installing the program. If it asks you to save anything try and do so in the same 'Virus Protection' folder so that you keep all the information together
15. Follow the on screen instructions and restart your computer when necessary

Every email that you send and receive will be checked for virus' and the program will run regular checks on your machine. Additionally, you will be prompted to update the program from time to time and it is important that you do this, as new virus' are invented all the time.

To run a complete test on your machine

16. Go to Start > Programs - it will either be in this list or go to > Accessories > System Tools > AVG Anti-Virus for Windows
17. Click the button that says 'Run a Complete Test' and your whole computer will be scanned for virus'

If a Virus is detected on your machine

AVG virus scanner should be able to detect and fix a virus and if this happens, follow the on screen instructions. If you do encounter a virus and your virus scanner does not pick it up, you can look it up on the Internet in Google or through one of the above links, there will be online instructions of how to fix the problem.
