LUZ MARIA SANCHEZ
b. 1971 works in Houston Untitled (useless bunker / shelter),
aluminum and wood structure
I work in two distinct areas. The first consists of the construction
of physical spaces and the creation of sound or light environments
that deal with the relationship between the body and its surrounding
space, the alienation of the senses, and the idea of space as being
open or confining. The second area of my work is the production of
audio and video works that explore duration, repetition and progression
using modular units of sound or images that question our sense of
memory and time. These works incorporate elements that have an emotional
reverberation that seeks to entice the viewer while remaining somehow
neutral.
The elements in my work are arranged so as to envelop the subject
in an abstract sensorial experience while preserving a feeling of
emotional urgency and physical immediateness. This is achieved by
the isolation of very precise and sometimes ever-present elements
from their customary human surroundings; these are then reduced to
their most punctual expression. Both the aluminium structure that
I constructed facing Saudi Arabia and isolating the subject from the
paradisiacal surroundings and the video footage that reproduced one
hour of April 4th 2003 are a continuation of these two working methods.
